Philosophy
Dr. Castillo approaches every patient with the understanding that surgery — whether reconstructive or cosmetic — is deeply personal. His goal is not simply to perform an excellent operation, but to ensure that every patient feels heard, informed, and cared for at every step of their journey. From the first consultation to long-term follow-up, you will find a surgical team that is as committed to your experience as it is to your outcome.

Specialties and Skills
Dr. Castillo is the only plastic surgeon south of San Antonio offering the DIEP free flap — a complex microsurgical procedure considered the gold standard in autologous breast reconstruction. This advanced technique allows women who have undergone mastectomy to rebuild their breast using their own tissue, resulting in a natural look and feel without the long-term concerns associated with implants. Bringing this level of care to the Valley means patients no longer have to choose between expert reconstruction and staying close to family.
Education And Experience

A Texas native Dr. Castillo was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas. After 2 years of Amarillo Community College, he went on to graduate from Texas Tech University. He began his medical journey at UTMB Galveston. During medical school he was actively participating in research projects as well as focusing on global health. As part of his Global Health initiative, he performed rotations in Argentina, Ecuador, India and Nepal.
After medical school his academic excellence placed him among the elite, enabling his acceptance into the prestigious six-year integrated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX, a program reserved for the nation’s most promising medical students. – “Finding out where residency will be!

“My first day as a plastic surgery resident”
Throughout his time, Dr. Castillo was dedicated to expanding his knowledge in plastic surgery, contributing significantly to the field through presentations at over 10 local and national conferences, along with numerous publications in journals. “Here he is as a 4th year resident stopping for a picture with one of many awards he earned throughout his training
His quest for knowledge and excellence took him through rotations at some of the world’s foremost medical institutions, which allowed him to train alongside globally renowned plastic surgeons at institutions, such as the John Sealy Hospital, Shriners Burn Hospital for Children, MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. Joseph Medical Center, The Cronin-Brauer Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic at Shriners Hospital, and Houston Methodist St. John Hospital. It was during this time he found his passion for the subspecialty of microsurgery. “Dr. Castillo knew the practice repetition would pay off.”

After completing plastic & reconstructive surgery residency, he moved to Baltimore and this is where he became a microsurgeon.
With this team he specialized in breast reconstruction by performing over 200 DIEP flaps in the 1 year fellowship.

After completing fellowship he brought this technique to the Rio Grande Valley eliminating the need for patients having to travel outside of the valley to receive breast reconstruction.
